Lahore Winters: What to Actually Wear

Lahore winters are not what the rest of Pakistan calls winter. No snow, no below-zero temperatures. But from November to February, there is something the city calls "thandi" — a damp, bone-touching cold that does not register on a thermometer but absolutely registers in your wardrobe. The problem with dressing for Lahore winter is that the temperature swings 15 degrees between morning and afternoon. You leave the house in a jacket at 9am and want to carry it by noon. By 5pm, it is cold again. What works: layers. Specifically, lightweight layers that you can add and remove without changing your whole outfit. This is where crochet works well. A crochet pullover is not as warm as a wool sweater, but it breathes in a way wool does not. You can wear it over a light t-shirt when it is cold and over a shirt when it warms up.
